Vertu's new mobile phone, the updated Ascent mixes discrete styling with stellar technology; making it the perfect match for a high-octane lifestyle
Inspired by the concepts of power, speed and stealth, Vertu uses aerospace-grade aluminum in its latest handset for the very first time. The reason is simple: aluminum delivers strength but remains exceptionally lightweight. Using various treatments such as precipitation hardening and anodization, they can create a surface layer five times harder than the raw material. A very reassuring statistic, if you happen to drop the phone.
Of course, Vertu looks after fans of the Ascent Ti by continuing to offer the model in titanium. An established material within the brand's portfolio, titanium is also chosen for its strength-to-weight ratio. A nine stage forging process is used to create the casing, which mainly involves heating the metal to 860 degrees before applying 630 tones of pressure to mould it. The handsets are then trimmed using high-performance vulcanized rubber or leather, which creates a phone that's smart and tough in equal measure.
Frank Nuovo, Principal Designer says, “The new Ascent design is an extreme expression within the heart of the Vertu Collection. The highly structural, linear and faceted nature of the design is hard edged and without compromise of character.”
That said, the Ascent is as enhanced on the inside as it is out, offering quad-band 3G and GSM network coverage, as well as Assisted GPS technology. Complete with pre-loaded worldwide maps covering more than 190 countries, it also includes a 32GB internal memory for storing all your files from video clips to photographs.
In a nice touch, the phone offers a watch face and chronograph function, and in a further nod to the principles of horology, the Ascent includes a dedicated side key to activate the stopwatch.
Intelligent timekeeping technology also ensures the clock is adjusted to the local time of the phone’s location wherever you may be. And on top of that, even when you're abroad the clock displays the time at your point of origin, keeping you in touch and connected to home.
In other little nooks and crannies, you'll notice a high-quality, five megapixel camera, a tilt sensor that adjusts the view from portrait to landscape when the handset is flipped horizontally, and a high intensity LED flashlight that delivers 22-lux worth of illumination.
It's jammed packed with features covering everything you could ever need and it's sheathed in a mighty, metallic casing. Fresh heights duly scaled - the new Ascent has arrived.
