Latest cell phones in the luxury market

Friday, 18 February 2011 ที่ 20:01

Mobiado, the Canadian luxury cell phones manufacturer (for those who don’t already know), has just announced a brand new handset that is expected to “destroy” like the BELLPERRE handsets I was writing about a couple of days ago. Part of the professional line, 105 GMT Discovery was described with pretentious words as “the expression of mechanical perfection, mastering of aesthetic details and the integrity of consistent craftsmanship”.

Being the first Mechanical Watch Mobile Phone, the collection is meant to surpass time and fashion barriers and represents a fine mixture of the tradition of watch-making and ground-breaking technologies applied in the world of mobile phones. Entirely made from sapphire crystal (the front and the back of the cell phone), it incorporates a Discovery mechanism in the lower half of the case which makes it possible for the user to set two international time zones, while the electronic phone enables the local time. This means that Mobiado 105 GMT gives you the possibility to view 3 time zones at the same time.
The Swiss mechanical watch movement consists of no more, no less than 25 jeweled bearings. It “performs 28,800 vibrations per hour, has 28 hours of power reserve and is a self-winding automatic mechanism with ball-bearing”. The movements, on the other hand, are fixed to a 3D shock absorbing system (which is in the patent pending phase), for protection. Made from brass (with the help of computer numerical control machines – aka CNC), the case of the Discovery mechanism is plated with 24-Carat gold.
Everything is precious about the latest cell phones coming from Mobiado. The keypad is made of sapphire crystal and has the buttons hand painted with 24-Carat gold paint, while the sliding battery cover is made entirely from one single piece of sapphire crystal. An optional feature consists of diamond watch hour and an “M”, made of diamond also, placed somewhere between the two mechanisms. The “M” illuminated when the keypad lights up.

When it comes to the technical features, they include: quadband GSM/EGSM (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and dual band WCDMA (850/2100 MHz), a 2-inch QVGA display with a resolution of 320x240 pixels (supports up to 16.7 million true colors), an integrated 2 megapixel digital camera (the resolution of images is 1600x1200 pixels while the resolution of video QCIF/SQCIF is 176x144 pixels), Series 40 5th edition, music player (supports AAC, eAAC+ and MP3 formats), video player (supports H.263, MPEG4 and 3GPP formats and codecs), Bluetooth 1.2, microUSB, an internal memory of 1GB.

Weighing 241.1 grams and measuring 128x47.5x10.6 millimeters, the Mobiado Discovery provides up to 3.5 hours of talk time and up to 9 days of stand-by time. As for the price and availability, there is no information yet. However, the company announced that there will be released a limited 50-pieces edition.

Vertu Constellation Quest: The blingtastic £17,300 smart phone

Thursday, 17 February 2011 ที่ 22:14

You may think your fancy new smart phone was expensive, but it's a drop in the ocean compared to this beacon of bling -- the Vertu Constellation Quest.
Announced at a glitzy press party attended by stars like Kevin Spacey and Seal, the Constellation Quest is the latest in a line of luxury phones made by Vertu, a British-based subsidiary of Nokia. The idea is pretty simple: to create mobile phones that scream luxury, along the same lines of a Rolex or Gucci handbag.

The Constellation Quest can be thought of as a really, really, really expensive version of a Nokia phone like the E72 or E63. Functionally, it works in much the same way -- it's the materials and care that have gone into making the hellishly expensive handset that give it its jaw-dropping price.

If you have a few thousand pounds to spare, there are three variants of the Constellation Quest you can pick up. For cheapskates, there's a £5,000 version made from brushed stainless steel and black leather. This is available in black or silver.

The £5,900 version is made with polished stainless steel and has some incredibly flash sapphire keys. You can get this in black, or pink leather for those Paris Hilton protégés out there. The most expensive of the handsets comes in at an incredible £17,300, and for that you get yellow gold instead of steel. There are more versions in the pipeline, we're told.
The actual specs of the device are unclear, however we did spot a camera with LED flash, two touch-sensitive buttons and a colour display. It also includes a proper analogue clock, which you think would have added another couple of zeroes to the cost, considering the price of designer watches. In saying that, this phone is less about the hardware and more about the fine materials and precious time that went into its creation.

"Our new smart phone represents the pinnacle of our 12-year history," said Hutch Hutchison, head of concept creation and design at Vertu. "Over the years we have mastered the use of fantastic materials, but now we are incorporating that with cutting-edge technology."
If you're rich and insane enough to buy the Constellation Quest from a Vertu boutique, you also have the option to sign up for the Vertu Concierge service -- a dedicated lifestyle manager to cater to your every whim. This service can be accessed via a dedicated key on the handset.

It looks like a practical joke, but all this is deadly serious. As Perry Oosting, president of Vertu puts it: "It's all about beauty and an emotional value. It's for people who either want to express their lifestyle, success and a higher appreciation of beautiful materials and experiences."
Or just how much cash they have.
